Gracie Abrams Reflects on High School Romance and the “Urge” to Apologize for Her Younger Self

Gracie Abrams has opened up about her high school years, admitting that she often feels the “urge” to apologize to everyone she knew during that time. In a candid interview with Cosmopolitan, the 25-year-old singer revealed that her first experience with love during high school was marked by what she describes as a period of immaturity.

“I was in high school and I was an idiot,” the That’s So True hitmaker confessed. “Do you ever have the urge to go back and apologize to everyone who knew you before you figured your s**t out? That’s how I feel about high school.”

Gracie explained that her first love was an all-consuming experience. “Falling in love at that time felt pretty obsessive,” she continued. “I loved everything about him.” While she didn’t explicitly name her first love, it’s likely she was referring to record producer and songwriter Blake Slatkin, whom she dated in high school and who later produced some of her early music.

“It was real love,” Gracie shared, reflecting on the relationship. “I felt so inspired and motivated by him, and he was my best friend.”

The pop star also discussed how the relationship ended, recalling multiple versions of the breakup. “The first time, I felt so guilty about it that I wanted to reach out all the time,” she said. “But instead, I kept a running note in my phone and would write down everything that I wanted to say.”

Gracie now recommends this practice to her friends, noting, “I promise you it works. And then you have all your receipts.”

Currently, Gracie has reportedly been dating Irish actor Paul Mescal since last summer.
