Jack Kays Discusses His Heavy Lyrics – ‘It Just Feels Relieving’
On Wednesday’s Loudwire Nights (Feb. 5), Jack Kays joined host Chuck Armstrong to discuss the release of his debut full-length album, DEADBEAT!. During their conversation, Kays reflected on the significance of the album, calling it “the most official release” of his career and the first time he’s put out a proper album with a full tour to support it.
“I’m pretty excited and I’m really proud of what I’ve done,” Kays shared with Armstrong, expressing his enthusiasm for the release and the journey it represents for him as an artist.
A major factor behind the strong connection Kays has built with his fans, especially with DEADBEAT! and his accompanying tour, lies in the emotional depth and authenticity of his lyrics. Kays doesn’t shy away from tackling difficult subjects like addiction, loss, and the fear of aging in his music. He believes that in order to write about such challenging topics, an artist must have had some personal experience with them.
“I think to properly write about something that is really hard, something like addiction or the loss of a friend, fear of aging, something like that, in order to write about it, you have to have coped with it a certain amount,” he explained.
Writing such vulnerable lyrics can be heavy, especially for an artist who works alone, but Kays finds that by the time he’s in the studio, those raw emotions are no longer “fresh,” making it easier to channel them into the music. “It just feels relieving,” he said, reflecting on the cathartic process of turning pain into art.
